New hire at Helmcode: communication, marketing and community. Who I am, what I'm here to do, and what we're planning for the NaN community.

hello, world — borja pérez here_

Hi, Community. I'm Borja :). The newest addition to Helmcode / NaN.

I wanted to introduce myself so you can all put a face to the name and get to know me a bit. You'll be seeing me around a lot more — here, on social media, and at events in general.

I've joined Helmcode and Cristian to help with his mission of building the best open AI community in the world. That way I can lend a hand putting together more content, events, workshops, hackathons, etc. that bring value to everyone here.

In my previous life I was a designer and illustrator. I spent 4.5 years at Manfred running marketing and the developer community. Some of you may have read one of the salary articles, or used the ATS killer that runs on NaN's models to analyze CVs.

Now I run communication and community growth at Helmcode. So — happy to be here with you all.

Who I am

I'm a kid from Valencia who loves the quiet of a small town and an empty beach in winter. I'm an introvert/extrovert whose social battery drains pretty fast. But I live my life helping others wherever I can pitch in.

Sometimes I obsess over details. Other times I ship like crazy, thinking more about the outcome. I like working because I have fun with what I do. Which leads me to clown around constantly — even though deep down I'm a certified Grinch.

I learn fast, and I'm trying to keep my multitasking under control because my short-term memory suffers a lot.

I have a ton of plants at home and I love horchata. Those two things are not related, but a random fact about a person never hurts.

I have 40+ tattoos. People always ask how many.

Wilco, The Kooks, Nick Cave and Mac Miller are my daily work soundtrack.

I go through about 3 coffees a day (I brew with a French press, so it's not that strong — don't worry). And I tend to think I have more hours in the day than I actually do.

I sleep like a log. Nothing disturbs my sleep.

What I'm here to do at Helmcode

We want to be Europe's reference company in open AI.

That's ambitious — but we also have a plan.

So the idea is that I can help with Helmcode's communication, marketing and community.

My mission is twofold:

  • Facing companies, I'm a sort of Developer Advocate (I can't code, but I don't know what other similar role there is). I like Lead of AI Education xD, because that's kind of the idea: helping companies adopt open AI and stop depending on closed models by default.
  • Facing the NaN community, I'll be the go-to person, alongside Cristian, for events, community activities, hackathons, workshops, etc. We want people to be in the community not just to burn tokens, but for the added value of a closed, curated community.

My role here is a curious one, because I can't produce technical content at the level required. So I'm a sort of knowledge miner and editor. The technical knowledge already exists in the team: in the problems being solved, in the community's questions, in the data, in customer calls. My job is to polish the rough diamonds I find.

What we're planning for the NaN community

A lot. But not everything can be tackled right away. So we'll go step by step.

The most ambitious part: we want to expand the content beyond the purely technical. A lot of people build product, but from the technology side. Talks and workshops on product, sales, marketing. We want NaN to be a community where anyone who wants to launch a product can do it with company.

And one more thing I'm really excited about: starting an open-source community project. A repo, a library, a Spanish-language benchmark, a dataset… We'll see. Let us cook!

I won't ramble any longer.

My way of doing marketing is very light-touch. I like turning a brand into a reference, building an audience that listens to you because you speak with objectivity and honesty, without trying to sell them anything, through timely and educational content.

So I'm here to turn Helmcode into a national reference first — and an international one later — in open AI and open-source / open-weight models.

Here are my socials in case you want to follow everything we're going to publish.
